Visual Symbols in My Life

Visuals are everything that I look at during the day and how I perceive what that image, object or visual means. I learned form taking this course that there are so many different ways to perceive the visuals in our world and as long as I can see half of them then I will have learned double or triple the amount of information that I would have got from that image, object or visual before I took this class. This class as taught me to see all of the different things that an image can tell you. I have learned more then I need to about the different meanings of visuals. I love to see the different meanings of images and videos. I enjoy knowing more information about the world around me and visuals is everywhere in this day of age.
An example is the different ways that people see the word "Peace":

These are the different things people can see:

1. The overlying Symbol

2. The symbol of the Peace Corp.

3. A soldier in the army

4. A peace Rally

These are all an image that could be seen by others about the same word. This class has taught me that a word can be worth a thousand images and I had a lot of fun learning about the different ways that, that statement can be seen throughout the world.

Final PBL Experience

                                                                                   Click on Jing to view

Click here to view My teams Google document describing our lesson and the components we used to make our problem based learning lesson. the jing video is the video I created for the group to show our students how to make a Gloster account and some of the basic functions of Glogster. Making this lesson was fun because our team tied what we have been doing all year in our class into one Project Based Learning experience and it felt great to take everything we learned and create a lesson of what we have learned. and teach a new concept to our students. My group really got along at the end of our computer applications class because of how much we worked together on all of the projects in the class and I think we did a great job with our project. This was a lot of fun and i'm glad we got the experience teaching Problem Based Learning lessons.

Podcast experience

I enjoyed doing this podcast because it was not just for an assignment but it was for a larger purpose. We contacted Angela Maiers who is a spokes person for "You Matter" an organization that she created to help students realize that they matter. Angela Maiers video gave our group the inspiration for this project. Click here to view her Ted Des Moines, this video is so good and she is such a great person. So view our podcast and Angela's video and you can see why we chose this project topic. Also I had a lot of fun making this podcast with my group members they are fun to work with and we had a great time making this project worth it. We each did our part and worked together if any of us had problems on something.

Collaborative Research project!

https://docs.google.com/a/uni.edu/document/d/1Wfxoptf8ZLi1PMh7r6_6TIoykYNw28kBXrewmnep-Ho/edit

This above is the Google Document that Team working on it made and click on the link and it should take you to the document to get more information on what we did.

My reflection of what we did:

It was great to get such an outgoing group but that made this project a little more difficult because we wanted to talk face to face but we could not and that was not our groups strong point. I helped to create and fix up details of each of the parts besides the Jing presentation. I learned a lot by looking over details and getting to know the software that we used, this was the first time I have seen the layout for the google presenter and I was glade that it is very similar to office, because I am familiar with that software. W all worked together very well and I was glad to have made this project with “Team Working on it”.
I learned that communicating digitally is very difficult when that is the only way that you can communicate. I think that portion of the project was difficult but I learned new ways to communicate and it kept me more on my toes about what I had to say. I learned new ways to use the google apps system and I enjoyed the survey maker and how to make a spread sheet of the information. I enjoyed the experience of communicating solely through digital means.
I will use google docs in the classroom, because of how good of a resource it is and will be to my students. I can communicate and connect with people around the world by using the Internet. I will have the skills to setup a meeting with a school in another country, because now I am more aware of the different ways to communicate online. I can see my self in the near future using these applications to not only use for my tech classes but use with all of my classes to “wow” my instructors.

Introduction Presentation Experience

What:
·         Me and my partner Jenna were trying to present ourselves and a few events that have made us who we are today. Also through the way we made the video tells a little about ourselves. We made the video using puppets and we glued our own faces on the puppets to be a little funny but also introduce ourselves. We were discussing who we were, where we live, and a fun adventure that we have been on throughout our lives.
·         We made a video using wevideo.com. It was hard to get all of what we wanted because of the limited media room that wevideo.com let us use. We had more information that we wanted to cover in out intro but we could not fit all of the files on to wevideo.com.
·         We used wevideo.com to create the movie and then presented it using youtube.com. I choose youtube because wevideo is linked to youtube and it was the easiest way to present the video.
So What:
·         I feel that we displayed a video that showed who we were and also presented the audience with entertainment at the same time. We used the right language to convey our message in a fun and interesting way. I would give us a 9 out of 10, because we used as much media as wevideo would allow.
·         I believe the audience liked our video because they knew how much time that we had to prepare for it and they were in the same boat so I believe everybody had a good time watching each other’s story. I know I enjoyed other people’s videos or introductions.
·         I could hear Dr. Zeitz in the back laughing while the movie was going on so I believed he enjoyed parts that were funny. Also the class was paying attention while the video was going on and they were not looking around the room or not paying attention. A class mate said good job to both of us when we left the room that day so we know that one of our classmates liked our video.
Now What:
·         I would include the information that we left out about our, families, hobbies, allergies and information about my eyes. I believe talking about my eyes gives an idea about how my life has been sense I was in third grade. The story is long but you will get to know who I am after you hear the story. I would like to share the story sometime if you want to hear it.
·         I think that we could have done more effects and made the effects more interesting to the audience but we were low on time and I’m still not an expert in using the information. But other than that I think that mine and Jenna’s idea for using puppets was great and I enjoyed making the video with her.
·         If we used more effects and different transitions I believe we could have made our lives seem more interesting than just us talking over a repeated background song. If I were to have talked about my eyes then it could have made others feel sorry for me and I was not looking for that kind of an introduction. I was looking for an interesting way to discuss who we were and where we are from along with a couple of fun facts about ourselves and I think we did a great job.
·         The best way to present yourself is to be you and let the audience know your interests, characteristics, skills, and feelings. We could have done a better job but I believe that we did well for only having two days to prepare for our introduction.

Poster For Veterans

1. I learned how to use Picmonkey.com as a tool to make a poster to help promote the Veteran Justice outreach.

2. My project is a poster to help promote American Veterans and to help these veterans through the website above in my poster. I enjoyed doing this project because I have a couple of my friends in the military right now and I would want people to help them out if they were in trouble.

3. This poster will promote the website and the organization that is meant to help veterans with mental problems after war.

Gaming and Stereotyping

I noticed while I was watching some of my favorite shows like south park and while I was searching the internet for games and information about games, how America and the media portray gamers and different races within games. All gamers that are portrayed are fat acne faced males who only play video games. They don't show many gamers as being sexy girls, or athletic individuals.

http://thevideogamejournalist.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/screaming-girl-gamer1.jpg
It is no longer just males who play video games as thought in the past. Females make up 42 percent of the gaming community and more women play video games then boys do, meaning that girls over the age of 18 play then boys under the age of 18. I found out all of these facts after listening to the gaming presentation that Aric and Min did in class. Thanks guys for getting me interested and getting me to look this up.

http://www.thetyunoproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Blacks-in-Video-Games.jpg

Another thing in gaming I noticed was the different races in video games and how they are portrayed. Like blacks as mostly being labeled as thugs, criminals, pimps, drug dealer, gun wielder, and athletes.
As for whites they are the hero in almost every game. Each race has its stereotypes and within video games those stereotypes are shown again and again. Blacks being portrayed like that is not what we should be teaching the gamers who are playing these games. There are games that have very realistic race portrayal but that is a minority in the masses.

Here is a video that is kind of outrageous, discussing racism in video games. This video has some strong words because of how passionate this person is about the subject but I think that it has a very good point.

Watch only if your over 18 years of age. click here
Enjoy!!

Google SketchUp Project

I did my sketchup with Chase,Nora, and Jessica. The picture of our playground is at chase's blog so just click on chases name and the beginning and that will take you to his blog. I enjoyed this program it was a little frustrating to get things perfect on the model. Because the model is completely 3D so when we tried to put a fence in it didn't line up the right way so it was difficult for us to fix the problem. I can see my self using this program in my classroom if my students need to build a model of a building or a structure of some sort.

Wasteland- review

I feel the messages the director is trying to express is the power of art and beauty of a the human race. I feel that they wanted to express the power of art and beauty of anything around the world. vik Muniz wanted to use garbage which is one of the last things any body thinks is beautiful or art in that matter. Vik then used the people that pick garbage for a living and those who need help in this world the opportunity to make art and make this using garbage and an image of themselves. This movie or better described as a documentary shows the lives of a wealthy artist and then the lives of garbage pickers in Jardim Gramacho so they show situational lives around the world. I think the two directors wanted to show the power of the arts and they both found an artist that was an oddball in the arts world but makes fantastic work with different materials. Vik changed the lives of the pickers in Jardim and this story was a fantastic one. I recommend you watch waste land if you have not already. No race or culture should be offended because this is a story of humans helping humans no matter where you are from. This movie added awareness of so much trash in the world and the power that one painting or even just one recycled material can help people who need it and how much one person can influence the lives of so many. The director used music and the art that was made from the artist vik muniz. I was interested and attentive throughout the film because I was learning so much about a different culture and seeing the beauty of Viks paintings. I also liked that each garbage picture had its own picker within the art and that made the art have meaning to those who see it. Each picture has a past, present, and future because it represents a real person. I will say once again I recommend that you watch this film I enjoyed learning about a new artist and a new culture.

Crash movie review

Crash is a movie about LA citizens of different race leading different lives and it ends up that each of there lives collide in this very good movie. I think the director was wanting to show how hard it can be to live as any race and how much pain that all races go through. All of the races are present in this film but also all of the races intertwine  in a story that is how some people live in America. All of the people in the movie are hard working people but because of racial stereotypes one race will not trust another, or help another because they feel like the other race will hurt them in some way. For example In the movie A women and her husband get carjacked and when they get home and a Mexican man is fixing there locks, the woman who just got carjacked claims that the Mexican will give the extra keys to gang members so that they can come and steal everything from there house. The Mexican man has done nothing to wrong this women but she assumes that he will because of his appearance. This movie was an eye opener for me because I believe in some cities that this is still happening. I think that this movie has an accurate portrayal of the races because stereotypes would not be true unless it has happened and been seen true. I'm not saying that all black people either steal cars or are movie producers but I think that the reactions that each race has with each others can be seen all over America. The way that people act in this movie can be seen during this time because this movie was based after the trade centers were hit. I think that a lot of Americans have hatred even still today for the Arab people. Even today in LA and big cities there is disputes over territory and racial arguments and distrust. I doubt the directors ethnicity played role in this production because I think that he portrayed good and bad people in races to show how either side can be influenced to act the opposite behavior whether they are good or bad. I think that all races can appreciate the value and knowledge that watching this movie can give people who might not see this kind of stuff everyday. I mean I have never seen first hand discrimination besides on tv. I have never seen someone be put down so much that they are kicked out of a store or anywhere. This movie showed the stereotypes of races all together and how these stereotypes effect everyone and not just one race. this movie gave insight on the world around us and we need to take a the lessons from it. The lesson is, be respectful and make sure that you think about the people around  you and not just about yourself and your problems. Everyone has problems and if everyone can just realize this then maybe we will be closer to excepting each other. The director used music to portray each race and what there stereotypical music would be. Such as when the black kid was singing country he was saying racial slurs in the lyrics and said now he understands country. All country does not portray racism of course and I think that some people believe the same way that the black kid in the movie believes. I thought that this movie was great and it was suspenseful and it kept me on my toes. I was into the movie throughout the entire movie.

Lincoln Elementary school?

Lincoln Elementary school is in Cedar Falls, IA and this school was very amazing. This school uses technology throughout its curriculum. One of the most interesting things I saw was the first class we walked into was a student lead project and these students were first graders? I didn't really understand the why the students were leading the discussion because I feel that they wouldn't get everything that needs to be done  get done. When I asked the teacher she said "that she is very surprised at how much they get done" and she informed me that the students like to tell each other if the problem is wrong or not. Also she checks the answers each day of the week and if the kids had troubles then they will go over the problem either later that day or the next day. The other thing that I thought was really cool was the project that the 5th graders were doing upstairs. The 5th graders were building a 7 ft tall structure build to with stand wind or a big fans winds. The teacher told us that he was giving them an impossible task (in there minds) and letting them see that they can do anything if they set there mind to it. The greatest thing that I saw was the community that the teachers and the staff had with one another. I loved the atmosphere and the way that the library teacher could give a tour into other teachers classrooms and they not care at all. This school was amazing and I hope that I can end up in a community based school program like this school.

Thank You for Smoking- Review

I believe that the director of this movie was telling the life of a man (Nick Naylor), who is the spokesperson for the Academy of Tobacco Studies. Nick lives a life where he never lies and he is always right. He can always be right because his job is to prove the other person wrong and he is very good at it. This movie was written to show the comedic and sick relationships and pleasure that some of the big companies like tobacco, gun safety, and the alcohol moderation council were assumed to have. I think that the author wanted to share a little comedy on to the subject that these industries live through each day. I mean i'm sure that there is not three people from each of these companies that get together and brag about how much or how many people there organization kills. Nick Naylor was told on a live show that he was going to pay for how many people that have suffered because of what he does (This could happen). Nick thinking that nothing was going to happen gets kidnapped and has nicotine patches put all over his body and when he wakes up in the hospital the doctor tells him that cigarettes had saved his life. Because Nick had been smoking for so many years the over dose from the nicotine patches was not enough to kill him because he had smoked cigarettes. Naturally he used this finding to tell people that cigarettes had saved his life. I thought that this was a great movie and I loved the laughs that I got during it because of the weird situations that Nick and his son got into.
I don't think that the directors ethical, or cultural background played a big role. I do think that his professional background plays a bit of a role because most of his movies deals with a problem that was going on in the years that he wrote them. such as in this film the big thing going on was do we ban smoking in public places or not. So he created a movie about the same kind of problem but it was a problem of the past. The past problem was do we need to put more of a label on the cigarette packs to express how dangerous they can be.  Also in 2007 he created Juno which is a movie about a girl who gets pregnant in high school. During this time there was a big increase in high school and teen pregnancies, so he created a heart filling story of everything going wrong but everything ends up great at the end. He is a great director and I enjoy the films that I have seen because he shows the comedic side and tries to say that life is not bad all the time and when people see that then the better off there life will be.
I would say that smokers might be offended and also the people who work in the jobs that the director is shining the light on in the film. I would think that these people do not want everyone to think that because they work in that field, that they act the same way as the characters do in the film. I would not want anyone to think that I sit around and brag about how many people the product that i'm selling kills per day or year. I think that his movie added a different aspect in what I thought that cigarette businesses want and how they advertise. By this I mean in the movie Nick Naylor tries to get actors to start smoking on screen again so that the people who are watching these films will say "he looked really good smoking that cigarette I should get some so I can look like that." I noticed that Nick went straight to social media on the TV to advertise the cigarettes because even though the actor never says "hey go out and buy cigarettes", the viewers can see him smoking and then, they too will be like if my favorite actor is smoking then I will smoke too. It brought to attention the little things like that in movies and media in general that catch peoples attention with out them even knowing that they are being manipulated into thinking that they want cigarettes or any product. The director used comedy in this film as a way to keep the viewer involved and to get across his points. There was a lot of things going on throughout the film that kept you focused on the screen and also the many different music styles and the pictures of old magazines running across the title pages and the end credits. Most of the pictures were of cigarette advertisements and then the growing popularity of the cigarettes and then the health issues came across and then the movie started. Overall I'm glad that I watched this movie because it was interesting and funny.

The World is Flat

I just watched a video for Dr. Z about how the world is flat by Tom Friedman who is a writer for the New York Times. Tom is known for writing about the world around him and what he experiences. He is a very good author and his book is what I want to talk about and it is called "The World is Flat". In this book he talks about the beginning of America when Columbus founded America, he went back home and told everyone that he figured out the world is round. Over 5 hundred years later Tom found himself saying to his wife and other people that he has figured out that the world is flat. This concept to me was hard to understand at first but the more he talked about the reason why he thought that the world was becoming flat was just brilliant. I wanted to share the video with my visual literacy classmates in case you have not seen this speech about his book. He does a good job of expressing his points and makes the video entertaining and insightful. I learned a lot from this video and I never thought of the world in this way.
The video below is Tom Friedman discussing his book at Yale and I think that this is a brilliant concept and I learned a lot from watching a video that was pretty much the same as this video. So check it out!

American History X- Review

lifeofikkins.com
The movie American History X in my view was a very good movie.  I believe that the director was trying to show that hatred can not be solved with more hatred. I mean the whole movie you are seeing the life of a Neo-Nazi. that has an extreme hatred for everyone that has made the streets in his neighborhood unsafe. The character Derek says that his hatred started when his father was shot by an African American. He then began to hate every one that was of a different color that came into his neighborhood. Derek then was consumed by hate and when two black guys came to his house and broke into his car and was about to break into his house, he shot them both and then curb stomped one of them. He went to jail and learned of his wrong thoughts and when he got out he tried to get out of his old gang of skinheads and realized it was going to to be hard to get out of his old life.
The depictions of minorities in this film are situational, because this film shows minorities that are poor and have low income. This movie shows a lot of blacks that are in gangs and some real gangs don't act the way that the gangs in this movie do, but the stereotype of gangs is portrayed in this movie. I believe that the director wanted to portray that hatred can be overcome.
I think that the director of the film tried hard to portray the roles in this film as best he could. I think that he portrayed black gangs vs. skinheads very well and I can see this movie being based off a true story. Other then him being influenced by what he read about Neo- Nazi's and gangs in L.A. I think all races and cultures and genders can appreciate this film for what the story tells. I think that some cultures will think that this story is very violent and should not be shown in schools but I think it is a very good representation of gang wars in America. This movie let me see a different life that I will never experience and see the horror of gangs and of how much hatred influences ones life. The director used a character, Derek's Younger brother Danny as a narrator letting the viewer see the story from a character that the viewer knows to keep us interested in the movie. Also showing Danny side lets us see what his brother did from a perspective that is not Derek's. Also showing Derek's time in jail when Derek was telling the story was really good for the plot to know what happened to Derek while he was in jail. Jail changed Derek and it was nice to see what changed him.

Helvetica- movie Review

I think in this movie the director is trying to share with the word the importance of the font Helvetica and to show how reliant the design industry is on using this font. The font is used everywhere and to be honest I did not know the name of this font until the movie was introduced to me. Once I say the font I could remember all of the street signs and really any industry that I can think of uses the Helvetica font. I believe that ethics, cultural, and professional background played a big role because the director was around when the big sweep of the Helveitca font was being used and so he portrayed is feelings and his views of what happened when the font got to be so popular. the culture in this movie is in Europe because most of the speakers that the director showed us where from somewhere in Europe but the pictures where both in Europe and the U.S. I was interesting to see the relationship of what happens in Europe and the U.S.
I don't feel that anybody can be offended by this movie because it is about a font. I could maybe see other designers not liking the context in which the director portrays Helvetica. After a set of people or designers talked there was a short picture gallery expressing what the designers where talking about. That gave me a visual representation of what I was being told and I enjoyed seeing somethings that I have seen before and how it relates to this font and its history. I believe that the director focused on the ideas and visual that were being displayed by many different designers and there perceptions of Helvetica. He used album art, billboards, air plane signs, buses etc...  He used the designers as the people to tell the story as it was being viewed at the time that the font was getting to be popular. I enjoyed watching this movie, but it could have had more interesting parts but overall it was cool to learn about a lot of different styles of fonts and how important  Helvetica is to fonts.

Killing us Softly Over View

I agree with the statements that Jane makes about  women being objectified in today's society because it is everywhere. To be "beautiful in today's world according to the media you have to be thin and have big boobs. "normal" and also very good looking women in my eyes are not always that body type of thin and big boobs. I think the twin themes are linked still because in today's world there are very few women who fall into the perfect height and weight, either they are too fat or too skinny but i'm not sure what she was saying about men not having to worry about this as much, because men are judged by women all the time. If you ask any women what her dream guy would be like? she will most likely say a tall and strong man with a 6-8 pack stomach. Not that many guys fall under that umbrella either, and those who don't have that body type are considered ugly. I believe to some women this is the biggest concern to them but there are women out there who don't care what others think about them and they just live there life the way they want. Its funny to me because when a young girl is portrayed as being older and sexier they put her in a nice dress or a skinny dress and once they are old enough to become that sophisticated women they try to make her into the innocent little girl again. I mean the model cant just be her self, I mean I enjoy looking at the models who dress like normal people more then looking at these unrealistic women.\
I don't think that men are portrayed as often as being violent toward women because women have put out a name for themselves as being more self reliant and being strong and protecting themselves. More often or not you get the man trying to protect a women that doesn't need his help but she appreciates the effort. I'm not just saying that all of this is only against women to I know for a fact that all of these issues effect men just as much. Media tries to portray men in a sexiest way as much as they do women. The only thing is most men enjoy the way that men are portrayed, because not all men are strong and handsome athletes but who wouldn't want to be called that? So this happens for both sides but men don't complain about the issues that are brought up.

Referent for Ideas

I remembered when we talked about this idea while I was with my friends, because we were talking about out favorite music concerts or shows we have been to and the different styles of music have a different atmosphere at each of the concerts.
My favorite show might look like this:

But one of my friends likes country so his concert might look more like this:

Another friend likes hip hop so his concert might look like this:

All of us were thinking of our favorite music but we all have a completely different view of how a concert looks like. Its amazing how we perceive basically the same thing so differently.

visual symbols and how they effect my life

I use symbols like the three above everyday in my life. Most people use these symbols in there life without realizing that they even use them. We just see signals and just do the action without really thinking about it, we just do it. my life as much more symbols these three I use a lot in my life. The stop sign because I drive around a lot with my friends. The recycling sign because my dad and I save all of the cans and bottles and anything plastic and we take it to the recycling center and use the money to eat more. which comes to the next symbol, I choose this because I eat a lot of food.

Expectations for Classroom Apps

blog.web20classroom.org

My expectations are very simple, I want to learn more about technology and how to incorporate my new knowledge in helping my students and myself to understand the information that I need to teach them. I hope that this class will help in teaching me to use new and interesting applications. Also I hope to gain relationships within the class and get to know everyone in the education technology minor. Other then this simple expectation I hope to have fun and by the way the class looks so far we will all have a lot of fun.
